Tanya Johnson
Tanya Johnson is the Director of Program at Turnaround for Children, and organization that supports school turnaround efforts by diagnosing social, emotional, and academic needs and supporting school improvement. She began her teaching career in Compton, CA as a teacher of math and science, and moved to the east coast in 2004 to use her talents and energy to successfully narrow the achievement gap in mathematics at North Start Academy in Newark, NJ. She then became a staff developer, focused on mathematics education, at New Heights Academy Charter School in Manhattan. After supporting the math team at that school in their efforts to raise math scores, she became the Director of Math for Explore Charter Schools in Brooklyn. Just prior to beginning her tenure at Turnaround for Children, Tanya worked as a consultant for Authentic Education, where she facilitated workshops and provided coaching support for teachers in the Toledo Public Schools. She holds a BA in Political Science from UCLA and an MA in Organization and Leadership, with a specialization in School Building Leadership from Teacher College, Columbia University.
